The Neon Tetra
In my experience, neon tetras are much hardier than their counterparts, the cardinal tetra. They require a cycled tank free of ammonia and nitrite fluctuations, and they are best kept in numbers. Seven is a good school, while three can work very well in smaller tanks. Combining a school of neons with other similar characins like black neons or glowlights can really add a lot to your tank. Neons are susceptible to neon tetra disease, a fatal malady. Symptoms are a whiting or pinking out of their red stripe. This is highly contagious so remove the afflicted fish at once, either to quarantine or put down.
